The Full Moon

I saw that Ginger was assigned as the charge nurse. “So, how was your date?” she asked as I met her for report at the nurse’s station.

“Fine,” I said, not wanting to divulge too much.

“Um-hmm, I’m sure it was,” she said with a wicked grin. Fortunately, her phone buzzed and she left, but I knew there would be more questions from the girls.

I went immediately to Rose’s room to check on her. She was still connected to a heart monitor, but the ventilator had been removed from her room. I could hear her breathing from where I was standing. It sounded strong and even. I checked on her a few minutes later and noticed that her heartbeat had started rising. I put on my stethoscope and walked over to her to double-check. Her hospital gown was damp with sweat. I listened for a moment to her heart. It was erratic.

I texted Roman:

“Rose has an elevated heart rate right now. Pulse racing, sweating, rapid breathing.”

After a minute he responded with, “That’s not unexpected. Is she awake and responsive?”

“She’s sleeping,” I wrote back.

“I’ll check on her myself in a few minutes. Let me know when she’s awake,” he texted.

That’s when she flatlined.

“Rose?” I called out to her as the alarm on the heart monitor sounded. “Rose? Can you hear me, Rose?”

I couldn’t feel a pulse. I hit the button on the wall for a Code Blue and ran to the hallway to get the crash cart.

I tried to remain calm as I unstrapped the equipment and whipped out my phone to call Roman.

“Isabella?” Roman answered.

“Roman, get in here now!” I yelled into the phone. “Rose has gone into cardiac arrest.”

“That’s not possible,” he said.

“Believe me, it’s happening!” I hung up the phone and started chest compressions.

Ginger ran into the room. “Where’s Dr. Roman?” she asked me.

“He’s on his way,” I answered.

Ginger took over compressions as I pushed Epinephrine into the IV. After a few breaths from Ginger, I prepped the defibrillator. Suddenly, Rose’s eyes shot open and she gasped for air. Her heart started beating again.

“Thank God,” I said quietly to myself.

Ginger stayed with me as we stabilized her. Was she having some reaction to the treatment?

Rose tried to say something but then started shaking violently and shoved me away from her. I fell to the ground, skinning my knee.

“Rose?” Ginger tried to restrain her. “You have to calm down. We are trying to help you.”

Rose’s face contorted and her jaw seemed to sag. She started moaning in a low voice—which cut off into a growl. I couldn’t believe my eyes as Rose began to transform into something not human.

I sat on the floor in shock as Ginger started yelling for help. Rose fell back in bed, slouching her head to the side unnaturally.

“What is happing?!” demanded Ginger. “What kind of medication is she on?”

“I don’t know,” I said with tears falling down my face, “Roman wouldn’t tell me.”

Rose started to cough up blood as she stared at me with red eyes.
